South Park Travelers - Ulaanbaatar

Description

Sandwiched between Russia and China, Mongolia holds the distinction of being the most sparsely-populated country in the world; the capital and largest city of Ulaanbaatar has just over a million people while the second-largest city barely has 85,000. Much of the country is covered by the Gobi Desert, and as a landlocked nation at a far northern latitude and high elevation, you can bet shit gets cold. Ulaanbaatar is the coldest capital city in the world, and to add insult to injury, it has among the highest levels of air pollution of any city on the planet. Combined with drab-looking Soviet-era architecture and some of the worst-quality roads in the developing world, it's not exactly the most pleasant place to be. Nevertheless, the economy is growing rapidly, resulting in an eclectic mix of old and new. Who'd have thought that you could find so many expats and such a vibrant nightlife scene in this place? In addition, Mongolia's president has a lot of bragging rights. He attended college at Harvard University and the University of Colorado in Boulder - the same school the creators of South Park went to. Checkmate.

The Mongolian language is quite an interesting one. The Cyrillic alphabet is most commonly used thanks to Soviet influence, but it does have its own unique script, introduced by the world's most famous Mongol, Genghis Khan. Furthermore, in regards to sentence structure, verbs usually come last. So, if you want to determine whether a Mongol will give you a passionate kiss or kick your fuckin' ass, you'll have to wait until the end of the sentence. Sorry about that. But if you accidentally bump into someone in the street and they grab your hand, don't fret. That's how they apologize.

Most notable, though, is Mongolia's history as a battleground for fighters and warriors duking it out on horseback to claim their territory and protect their kin in the great Mongol empire. Weapons like bows and arrows, curved swords, and lances were developed and used by these fearsome conquerors. These nomadic fighters are also credited with inventing gunpowder and firearms.

I've found the depiction of Mongolians in "South Park" and "The Stick of Truth" to be nothing short of insanely hilarious and true to their history, if not wildly inaccurate in the modern age. God damn Mongorians always breaking my shitty wall.
